The Washington Monthly has posted a review of what might be a fascinating book (link below). It's "The Making of the American Conservative Mind: National Review and its Times" by Jeffrey Hart.
Apparently some of those who launched the modern-day conservative movement are not happy with the results (but for that matter, who is?). It almost sounds like they regret "taking over" the Republican Party.
Which raises some questions for liberals regarding our "Crashing the Gate" strategy of working within the Democratic Party. If we're successful, will we be able to initiate a truly progressive agenda? Or will we end up with the equivalent of the conservative's "Frankenstein Monster" -- a crude perversion of our ideology that doesn't represent our values?
